The Honorable Raymond Gary
Former Governor, State of Oklahoma
This highest honorary award that is conferred by the University is named for one of its former presidents who, during the period 1928-1951, made outstanding contributions to the University, to higher education, and to the benefit of mankind as the first Director of America's Point Four Program of providing technical assistance to nations around the world.
Mr. Gary, a lifelong resident of Oklahoma, graduated from Madill High School and attended summer school and night school at Southeastern State College, while teaching in the Marshall County schools. He later served two terms as County School Superintendent. In 1946, he organized and became president of the Sooner Oil Company. Later, he organized Gary Industries, a holding company for Gary Cattle Company, Sooner Express, Sooner Corporation, and Western Heritage Life Insurance Company, and now serves as president of each. He served fourteen years as a State Senator, and from 1955-1959, he was Governor of Oklahoma. His administration is remembered for sound fiscal policies for the management and budgeting of state funds. Mr. Gary is a member of the Board of Directors of City National Bank, Oklahoma City and First National Bank, Madill; and chairman of the Board of Texoma Bank, Kingston.
