Mr. Mike Wright
Chairman of the Board, Exxon Corporation
It is appropriate the Henry G. Bennett Distinguished Service Award be presented to The Honorable Henry Bellmon, Mr. M. A. Wright and Mr. Raymond A. Young -- individuals who have demonstrated with their hearts, minds and souls those qualities of character which exemplify the life of the man in whose name the award is made.
Mr. Wright has literally "grown up" with the petroleum industry. After receiving his degree in civil engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1933, he was employed as a roustabout with the Carter Oil Company, then a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation. During a forty-year career, he has assumed both domestic and worldwide responsibilities which have culminated in his present position as Chairman and Chief Executive of Exxon Company, USA, in Houston, Texas. He has served as President of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States; he was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson as a member of the National Water Commission; President Nixon appointed him to the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service for a term of nine years; and he was appointed a member of the Executive Advisory Committee of the National Gas Survey, organized for the purpose of determining national gas energy policies.
