The following indexes, abstracts and handbooks are some of the more important reference tools in agriculture. The indexes and abstracts are used for locating journal articles about a particular subject or by an author. The handbooks are useful for locating facts and formulas, procedures or protocols, addresses, or illustrations.

Databases and Related Print Indexes and Abstracts

AGRICOLA
An agricultural index prepared by the National Agricultural Library. The major subject areas include agriculture, forestry, home economics, and nutrition publications. AGRICOLA covers primarily U.S. publications but includes many foreign publications. Dates included are generally from 1970 to the present with some selected older materials. Before 1970, use the Bibliography of Agriculture. Started in 1942, the Bibliography of Agriculture provides subject and author indexes to agriculturally related materials.

Biological Abstracts on CD-ROM
A comprehensive index, with abstracts, to biology, botany, zoology, microbiology, clinical and experimental medicine, biochemistry, and biophysics publications. Many of the publications indexed in Biological Abstracts are agriculturally related or have agricultural implications. Biological Abstracts on CD-ROM indexes publications from Jan., 1985 to the present. For publications prior to 1985, use the print edition of Biological Abstracts which covers Dec., 1926 to the present.

CAB Abstracts
A CD-ROM index with abstracts to agriculture, food sciences, nutrition, and veterinary medicine publications. CAB Abstracts indexes primarily international publications although many U.S. publications are included. Coverage is from 1972 to present and is updated quarterly. CAB Abstracts for 1984 to the present can be accessed through CD-NET. The years 1972-1983 are available from one terminal in the Science & Engineering Reference Area. Prior to 1972, use the appropriate CAB print index, Animal Breeding Abstracts, Field Crop Abstracts, Forestry Abstracts, Horticultural Abstracts, Index Veterinarius, Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews: A & B, Plant Breeding Abstracts, Review of Plant Pathology, Soils & Fertilizers, etc.

Congressional MasterFile 2
Indexes Congressional documents, hearings, prints, reports, and legislative histories. Many topics related to agriculture, agricultural policy and agricultural bills are covered. It indexes materials from 1970 to the present. Before 1970 use the CIS U.S. Congressional Committee Hearings Index and the CIS U.S. Serial Set Index.

Dissertation Abstracts
Contains citations, with abstracts, to dissertations and some theses issued by accredited U.S. educational institutions and over 200 non-U.S. institutions. Virtually all topics are covered including the agricultural disciplines. Dissertation Abstracts on CD-ROM indexes all dissertations back to 1860, most without abstracts. Before this date, use Dissertation Abstracts International and Theses Abstracts.

Food Science & Technology Abstracts (FSTA)
This database abstracts publications dealing with all areas of food science and all types of food products. The library's coverage is from Jan., 1969 to the present and is available from a terminal in the Science & Engineering Reference Area. For coverage of older materials, try Biological Abstracts.

GPO Monthly Catalog
A general topic index that covers publications produced or distributed by the Government Printing Office including books, reports, studies, serials and maps. Publications of interest to agriculture from the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Food and Drug Administration are indexed. This CD-ROM database covers publications from July, 1976 to the present. The print equivalent is the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications.

Medline
This is a comprehensive CD-ROM database covering all aspects of medicine including dentistry, health care, hospitals, medicine, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, and speech & hearing publications. Articles dealing with veterinary medicine are also indexed in Medline. Additionally, many drugs and medical procedures are based upon plant and animal tests. Medline on CD-ROM covers the most recent six (6) years. Prior to this time, use Index Medicus which is the print equivalent.

Selected Water Resources Abstracts
This database is produced by the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) and is managed by the U.S. Geological Survey. This is a group of water-oriented organizations which work together to improve access to watar data and water information. Selected Water Resources Abstracts covers water related literature from 1939 to the present time.

Statistical MasterFile
This index covers statistical reports of U.S. and state governments, international organizations, professional, trade and business associations, commercial publishers, and university and independent research organizations. Agricultural information is included. The CD-ROM index covers material from 1984 to the present and is identical to these print indexes: American Statistics Index, Index to International Statistics, and Statistical Reference Index.

Analytical Abstracts
This abstract covers the field of analytical chemistry including the analysis of food products and the procedures required. We have Analytical Abstracts from 1954 to the present.

CIS Index to Publications of the United States Congress
A comprehensive index to all Congressional publications. Congress issues publications in the format of documents, hearings, prints, reports, and legislative histories. Agricultural topics are covered in many Congressional publications. The library's holdings cover from 1970 to the present time. Searches can also be performed in Congressional Masterfile 2 on CD-NET.

Chemical Abstracts
This is a comprehensive abstracting publication covering all aspects of chemistry. The library's holdings are Jan., 1907 to the present.

Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
This is the codification of the general and permanent rules published by the Executive departments and agencies in the Federal government. Agriculturally related departments and agencies include the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the Food and Drug Administration. The library keeps the most current CFR on reference.

Cumulated Index Medicus
This is an abbreviated version of the Medline database and Index Medicus. Cumulated Index Medicus indexes the major publications in medicine. The library's holdings cover from 1960 to the present. The comprehensive issues of Index Medicus can be found in the Government Documents Division.

Microbiology Abstracts Section A: Industrial & Applied Microbiology
This index covers all aspects of microbiology including microbial products, toxins, foods, plant diseases, environmental pollution, methodology,vaccines, microbial resistance, and antibiotics. The library's holdings include 1975 through 1988. For more current coverage, try Biological Abstracts.

Microbiology Abstracts Section B: Bacteriology
This publication covers materials relevant to bacteriology including, methodology, taxonomy, genetics, antibiotics and antimicrobial, toxins, immunology, medical bacteriology, plant diseases, and ecological aspects. The library's coverage is from 1975 through 1988.

Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews, Series A: Human and Experimental
This publication abstracts articles dealing with all aspects of human nutrition and includes sections on techniques, foods, physiology and biochemistry, human health and nutrition, and disease and therapeutic nutrition. The library's holdings are from 1931 to 1992. The publications indexed in Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews, Series A: Human and Experimental are also indexed in the CD-ROM database CAB Abstracts on CD-ROM.

Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews, Series B: Livestock Feeds and Feeding
This index abstracts publications covering feeds and feedstuffs, analysis, technology, feeding of animals, physiology, biochemistry, and diet in etiology of disease for domestic animals. The library's holdings are from 1977 to 1992. The publications indexed in Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews, Series B: Livestock Feeds and Feeding are also indexed in the CD-ROM database CAB Abstracts on CD-ROM.

General Agriculture

Agricultural Information Resource Centers: A World Directory 1990
A world-wide listing of almost 4,000 information resource centers that have agriculture- related collections and/or information services. Agriculture is defined broadly ranging from production agriculture to basic research, including related sciences. Listings are organized alphabetically first by country and then by city and parent institution or by state (or province or republic), then by city and parent institution. Each institution lists name, year founded, address, person responsible, size of the collection, number of journals, strengths of the collections and/or services, lending policies, etc.

Agricultural Research Centers
A comprehensive listing of the agricultural research and technology institutes worldwide. This directory catalogs in excess of 5,000 laboratories or industrial companies active in all aspects of agricultural research including: agronomy, animal breeding & veterinary science, crop protection, environmental science, food technology, horticulture, natural resources, and plant genetics. Entries are arranged alphabetically. Entries include the name of the organization, address, senior staff and department heads, research interests and special facilities, and budget and staff information.

Agricultural Statistics
A reference book on agricultural production, supplies, consumption, facilities, costs, and returns. Tables of annual data cover a wide variety of facts. World summaries of production and trade of major farm products are prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture from reports of the Department of Commerce, official statistics of foreign governments, other foreign source materials reports of U.S. agricultural attaches and Foreign Service Offices, and the results of office research. Many data are the results of actual counts, others are estimates. Estimates for crops, livestock, and poultry made by the U.S Department of Agriculture are prepared mainly to give timely current State and national totals and averages. Copies are kept in both Government Documents and Science & Engineering.

Agriculture Dictionary
A comprehensive dictionary of agricultural terminology in use in the following areas of agriculture: animal science, entomology, agronomy, horticulture, agricultural economics, agricultural mechanics, agricultural education, botany, food science, poultry science, natural resources, conservation, meterology, pathology, aquaculture, dairy science, range science, and forestry. Each area has a vocabulary unique to that area and the Agriculture Dictionary helps bridge the gap between areas of agriculture.

American Men & Women of Science
A biographical directory of today's leaders in physical, biological and related sciences. Entries are arranged alphabetically by the scientists last name and include: birthplace and date, date(s) of marriage, number of children, field of specialty, degrees earned, honorary degrees, professional experience, current position, concurrent positions, memberships, areas of research and address. Over 7,300 scientists in the agricultural and forest sciences are included.

Black's Agricultural Dictionary
A reference source for farmers and students of agriculture, and anyone associated with agriculture. Definitions cover all aspects of agriculture and include sufficient information to serve as an introductory source.

Census of Agriculture
The only source of statistics on U.S. agriculture showing comparable figures state by state and county by county classifying farms by size, tenure, type of organization, principal occupation and age of operator, market value of agricultural products sold, and at the State level, Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code. The complete Census includes the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the outlying areas (Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands), the Census of Horticultural Specialties, Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey, and the Agricultural Economics and Land Ownership Survey. The Census of Agriculture is a major source of production, economic, land value, farm practice and other information on the agricultural sector of the economy.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
A single volume reference manual which provides broad coverage of all types of chemical data commonly encountered by scientists in laboratory procedures. The data provided are in tabular form and are the physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds used by scientists. Some of the types of data included are conversion factors, physical constants of organic compounds, elemental properties, thermodynamic properties, fluid properties, biochemistry and nutrition, diamagnetic susceptabilities, elemental line spectra, properties of solids, practical laboratory data and mathematical tables.

Doane's Facts and Figures for Farmers
A basic reference book for anyone in agriculture. Included are tables and formulae for conversion units, figuring interest, record keeping, land descriptions, figuring volumes, livestock breeding, feeding, diseases, marketing, soils and fertilizers, crops culture, weed control, irrigation, grain drying, and machinery costs.

Encyclopedia of Agricultural Science
The Encyclopedia of Agricultural Science is a collection of articles on the major disciplines in the study of agricultural science, common topics of research, areas of public interest and concern, and areas of economics and policy. Articuls are arranged alphabetically by subject. Each article also contains an outline, a glossary, cross references, and a bibliography.

Merck Index
A one volume compendium of information on the most important chemicals, drugs, and biological substances. The information provided includes: common chemical name; Chemical Abstracts name; alternate chemical names; trademarks; molecular formula; percentage composition; patent and chemical information; biological, pharmacological, and clinical information; structure; physical data; derivatives; toxicity data; therapeutic category; and literature references.

Official Methods of Analysis
Published by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. This book details the analytical methods and procedures which the association recommends for the determination of content and contamination of many agricultural products and substances used in agriculture. Some of the analyses cover fertilizers, water, plants and animal feeds, pesticides, bacterial contamination, and drugs. Included are analytical methods for distilled liquors, malt beverages,wines, coffee and tea, cacao, cereals, dairy products, eggs, fish, flavors, meats, nuts, oils and fats, sugars, and various food additives.

Oklahoma Agricultural Statistics
A compilation of data gathered from producers, hatcherymen, livestock feeders, slaughterhouse managers, and grain elevator operators on current agricultural statistics of acreage, yield, and production of crops, livestock and poultry inventories, and other information pertaining to the Oklahoma agricultural economy. Production data and livestock inventories are given by county and by year.

Practical Handbook of Agricultural Science
A "quick reference" to a variety of topics pertaining to soils and to the production and use of plants and animals. Most of the information is organized into tables which cover virtually all aspects of agriculture. Major topics of coverage include climate, soils, tillage & rotation, pests and other losses, horticultural crops, oilseeds, cereal grains, seed conditioning, forage, leaf protein, roughage, silage, animal production, dairy and egg production, conversion tables, and statistical tables.

Statistical Abstract of Oklahoma
A comprehensive reference for economic and demographic statistical data pertaining to Oklahoma. Much of the agricultural information is derived from the two most recent Census of Agriculture conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. Information provided includes, number of farms, acreage in farms, costs devoted to agriculture, value of agricultural products sold, production expenses, incomes by crop and commodity, crop production, livestock population, gross and net farm income, and farm expenses.

Statistical Abstract of the United States
A compilation of statistical information on farms and farm population; land use and irrigation; farm cooperatives; farm income, expenditures, and debt; farm output, productivity, and marketings; foreign trade in agricultural products; specific crops; and livestock, poultry, and their products. The principle sources of this information are reports issued by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the National Agricultural Statistical Service, and the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The information is in tabular form and organized by State or nationally and by year. The Forests and Fisheries section presents data on the area, ownership, and timber resource of commercial timberland; forestry statistics covering the National Forests and Forest Service cooperative programs; product data for lumber, pulpwood, paper and paperboard, and similar data.

Dictionary of Soil Science
A collection of more than 2,800 terms, with definations, used by soil scientists and technologists.

Handbook of Plant and Crop Stress
A comprehensive reference to all the factors and their interrelationships related to plant and crop stress. The main sections of the book deal with soils, salt tolerance, specific responses of plants and crops to stress, future promises, irrigation, and beneficial aspects of stress.

Methods of Soil Analysis
A compliation of the methods of analyses for soils providing a uniform set of procedures which can be used by the majority of scientists and engineers working with soil and, in that way, improving their ability to communicate about their observations. Major areas of discussion include statistical analysis, mineralogical methods, methods for analysis of soil matrix and structure, methods for assessing energy status of the soil components, assessing thermal properties of soil, methods for determining the concentration and flux of soil solutes, and methods for the study of the soil gas phase.

Animal Science

American Standard of Perfection
This publication by the American Poultry Association illustrates the ideals of perfection for the male and female of each variety of large foul, bantams, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Each breed or variety is listed with it's history and origin, economic qualities, disqualifications, standard weights, shape for both the male and female, and color for both sexes.

Breeds of Livestock
An educational and informational resource on breeds of livestock throughout the world. This site is maintained by the Animal Science Department at Oklahoma State University.

Cat Fanciers' Association Cat Encyclopedia
Over 40 breeds that are recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association are listed and lavishly illustrated with color photographs. The origin of each breed is described as is it's temperment. Breeding trends and recognized variants are included. The last section of the book describes the confirmation standards for each breed and for each variant.

Cattle: a Handbook to the Breeds of the World
Over 1,000 breeds and types of cattle are described. The breeds are organized by their region of origin. Information about each breed includes their development and improvement in stock, the importance of the breed and variants. Also listed are countries which have breed associations.

Encyclopedia of the Dog
This encyclopedia covers more than dog breeds. It has chapters on dog evolution, dogs and humans, canine anatomy, dog behavior, and caring for dogs. Each of the over 400 breed description is accompanied by several photographs. The breeds are arranged by type and use.

Encyclopedia of the Horse
A detailed and profusely illustrated book describing the evolution of the horse, information and illustration of virtually every modern breed of horse, and the impact of the horse on human history.

Feed Additive Compendium
A complete listing of animal drugs approved by the FDA. The Feed Additive Compendium provides the information required to legally prepare, label and market or feed medicated animal feeds. The regulatory status and uses of the included drug are provided. Representative specimen labels are also shown.

International Encyclopedia of Dogs
Over 300 dog breeds are listed and each description contains the origin and development of the breed, temperment, health matters, adaptability, special care and training, and conformational essentials of the breed. The breeds are listed in alphabetical order.

International Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds
A unique reference book on equine breeds, including much of the history of each breed. Much of the information was obtained from breed authorities and thus purports to be more accurate than many past breed books. Some conformation information is listed, however, most of the text is historic and very interesting. Each breed description is accompanied by one or more black and white photographs.

International Encyclopedia of Horses & Ponies
A lay encyclopedia which describes the evolution of horses and horse breeds, and the breeds which were developed in the various regions of the world. The actual breed descriptions include the origin of the breed, their appearance, heights, color, and personality.

Modern Breeds of Livestock
Information about the breeds of livestock currently found in the United States. Sections include cattle, swine, sheep and goats, and horses. Within each section, the breeds are covered in various chapters. For the major breeds, the information given includes origin, color pattern, improvement and expansion, promotion, breed associations, performance records, evaluating the breed, and breed publications.

Pigs: a Handbook to the Breeds of the World
A guide to breeds and types of domesticated pigs, including their wild ancestors and relatives. Much of the text deals with the breeding of pigs and the development of the current and past breeds and varieties. The breed descriptions are arranged by region of the world. A series of color plates illustrate many of the breeds.

Rare Breeds: the Vulnerable Survivors
A description of the rare and unusual breeds of livestock developed over the years. Chapters deal with cattle, sheep, pogs, poultry , and geese, ducks and turkeys. The history of each breed is detailed along with the breed's current status, description, and uses.

Standard Guide to Horse & Pony Breeds
A compilation of over 150 horse and pony breeds with a detailed and informative article on applied confirmation. The breeds are described with origin of the breed and confirmation standards, many of them official standards of the relevant horse breeding association.

Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products
Laboratory procedures for the study of milk and milk products are detailed. The procedures listed are grouped according to the what is being tested. Sampling procedures can be found in the same chapter. Most tests yield microbiological data, but many others describe analysis procedures for the components of milk and milk products.

World Dictionary of Livestock Breeds, Types and Varieties
This dictionary lists the names of livestock (horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, buffaloes and asses) which may be encountered in the literature to indicate which names are synonymous, and to recommend one form for English use. For each breed, type or variety, a brief note as to place of origin, economic use, relationship to other breeds, breed characteristics, and the origin of the name are given.

Biochemistry

Basic Biochemical Methods
An introduction to methods used in the isolation and quantitation of various cell fractions or compounds having biological significance. The major sections of the book deals with proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, lipids, clinical or nutritional biochemistry, and cell components.

Concise Encyclopedia of Biochemistry
A single volume encyclopedia covering all areas of biochemistry. This revised and updated edition of the 1976 Brockhaus ABC Biochemie published in Germany.

Data for Biochemical Research
A reference book of data for general biochemical laboratory use. This is not a comprehensive manual containing data for all areas of biochemistry, but is designed to be useful to all biochemists for general laboratory proicedures.

Dictionary of Biochemistry
A reference work on the terminology of biochemistry for students and scientists. Over 12,000 entries are found and are bases upon the recommendations of the Commission of Biochemical Nomenclature, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and the International Union of Biochemistry.

Dictionary of Steroids: Chemical Data, Structures and Bibliographies
An extensive description of all significant steroids. Most entries consist of the name of the steroid, CAS registry number, structure, formula, molecular weight, structural variatiants and their properties, and biographical references.

Handbook of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
A multi-volume set of articles divided into four main sections; proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and steroids, and physical and chemical data, with miscellaneous data. Each section consists of articles dealing with some narrower aspect of the section topic.

Forestry

Fire in Forestry
A reference manual to describe how a forest fire burns, how it affects the ecosystem, and how managers have developed equipment, systems and organizations to mold fire into a beneficial occurrence.

Forestry Handbook
A reference book of data and methods in all phases of forestry and allied fields. Included are the working methods and techniques, formulas, tables, converting factors, and related data commonly used in the practive of forestry in the United States and Canada. A few of the sections found in the handbook are; forest ecology, geology and soils, insect and disease management, measurements, silviculture, logging, renge management, outdoor recreation management, urban forestry, forest resource law, etc.

Seeds of Woody Plants in North America
This is a revised and greatly expanded edition of the 1948 USDA publication Woody Plant Seed Manual. The main thrust of this work is the propagation of woody plants not only of commercial importance, but also of significance as shelterbelt plantings, and food and cover for wildlife. The number of genera covered expanded to 386 (more than double the 1948 volume) and includes over 1000 new literature citations. The information given about each species includes; growth habit, occurrence and use, flowering and fruiting, collection of seeds, germination, seed quality testing, and nursery and field practices.

Tropical Forestry Handbook
This book covers all fields required for the management of tropical forest resources. It contains concepts, methods, and comparative data and includes chapters on topics such as ecology, geology and soils, climatology, remote sensing, seed handling, nursery management, nutrition, watershed and range management, pest management, fires, harvesting, economics and policy.

World Forest Biomass and Primary Production Data
A reference handbook pulling together data on forest biomass and production worldwide. About 600 papers were reviewed covering over 1200 forest stands in 46 countries to produce this volume. Data is presented by country and by tree genus within the country.

Horticulture

American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Garden Plants
A source of theoretical and practical information for over 8,000 plants, half of which are illustrated with photographs. The book utilizes two methods of organization. The dictionary section is arranged systematically within botanical groupings, and the dictionary section is organized by size, color and season of interest in the color section. Each listing provides the basic information on cultural requirements and growth characteristics.

American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Gardening
An illustrated guide to gardening techniques, serving a both an introduction to gardening and a refresher for those experienced gardeners. The aim of this reference book is to present information that gardeners need on how to design their gardens, and increase plants of all types, whether they are ornamentals, fruits, or vegetables.

Complete Manual of Organic Gardening
A collection of essays dealing with all aspects of organic gardening. These include soils, composts, muclhes, cultivation, propagation, vegetables and vegetable gardening, herbs, fruits, ornamentals, lawns, weeds diseases and pests.

Dictionary of Horticulture, National Gardening Association
Definations of over 15,000 plant and horticulturally related terms. It also contains a common name index showing the Genus and species usually associated with each common name.

Encyclopedia of Perennials: a Gardener's Guide
An encyclopedia for the lay gardener describing the herbaceous perennials. The plants are arranged by genera. Under each genera is given the Family name and brief information about each genus including; region of origin, etiology of the genus name, growth habit, flowering and fruiting habits, and cultural notes. Separate sections for each genus also give the cultivation, landscape use and propagation information. The most commonly cultivated species are listed for each genus and include specific information such as; origin, height and spread, growth habit, leaf and flower characteristics, blooming period, flower color, and hardiness zones.

Exotica 4: International: Pictorial Cyclopedia of Exotic Plants from Tropical and Near-Tropic Regions
A comprehensive pictorial record of ornamental and fruited plants and trees from the tropical and near-tropical regions of the world. Primarily a book of illustrations, its main objective is to provide guidance to the multitude of exotics. The text describes the plants and includes important varieties and cultivars.

Gardeners' Dictionary of Horticultural Terms
A dictionary of technical terms used in horticulture and the other plant sciences. Plant parts and taxonomic features are included, but plant species are not.

Hardy Herbaceous Perennials
The purpose of this set is to familiarize the reader with the cultural requirements and landscape potential of perennials. The genera included are those which are hardy in temperate climates abd are recognized as having garden merit or are valuable for their ecological considerations or botanical interest. The text is organized by genera and includes; Region or origin, some general information about the genera, cultivation requirements, possible combinations with other species, and propagation. Next are listed the species and the region of origin, height, botanical characteristics, flower characteristics, bloom period, uses, and hardiness zone.

Hortica: Color Cyclopedia of Garden Flora in All Climates Worldwide and Exotic Plants Indoors
A pictorial assemblage of plants and flowers found all over the globe. The pictorial part is divided into 16 categories, such as, Exotic Plants Indoors, Perennials, and Trees planted indoors. Each plant is described as to character and use, family and origin, and synonym and common name.

Horticultural Research International: Directory of Horticultural Research Institutes and Their Activities in 74 Countries
An alphabetical listing, by country, of the units performing horticultural research. Over 1,800 research institutes in 74 countries are listed including the principle investigators related to specific crops.

New Royal Horticultural Society Dictionary of Gardening
As stated in the Forward, this series "brings together all that is known about gardening". A large portion of this multi-volume work consists of plant descriptions. The plants listed are those important to horticulture, accurately named and carefully described. The cultivation notes given for each Genus include the growing conditions of the plants in the wild, the most important members of the Genus, uses in the garden, descriptions of their cultivation, propagation and susceptibility to pests and diseases.

New York Botanical Garden Illustrated Encyclopedia of Horticulture
The main entries of this multi-volume set are detailed descriptions of thousands of plants, given under their generic names, including advise on how to use these plants effectively in cultivation. Additional entries include brief descriptions of the characteristics of the more important plant families together with lists of their genera known to be in cultivation. Many photographs, some in color, are used to compliment the text.

Random House Book of Perennials
An illustrated guide to over 2,500 herbaceous perennials which are hardy enough to withstand at least -5C. The plants are arranged by flowering time, and within flowering times, by famil in botanical order. Included with the botanical name is the common name, region of origin, botanical characteristics, cultivation, and hardiness.

Tropica: Color Cyclopedia of Exotic Plants and Trees from the Tropics and Subtropics
A pictorial compliation of foliage and flowering plants from the world's warm climate regions. The pictorial section is arranged by family and includes a photograph, botanical name, variety or cultivar name, and region of origin. The text portion is in alphabetical order by Genus and includes the family name and a list of species or vatieties or cultivars with botanical characteristics and hardiness region.

Wyman's Gardening Encyclopedia
An extensive compilation of articles, several in depth, about plants of ornamental or economic value. For most plants, the information given includes it's place of origin, growth habit, uses and culture requirements, taxonomic features, and important varieties, if any. Important cultural procedures and practices are covered.

Landscape Architecture

Landscape Plants for Eastern North America: Exclusive of Florida and the Immediate Gulf Coast
The primary purposes of this book is to provide useful information about landscape plants for both professional landscape designers and for students of horticulture and landscape architecture. Plants are listed alphabetically by their botanical name and the information provided includes their common name, growth habit, family, origin, hardiness zones, function, a graphic of their size and habit, adaptability, seasonal interest, problems and maintenance, and related species. At the end of the book is a list of plants by category (vines, shrubs, trees, etc.).

North American Landscape Trees
A description of most of the cold-hardy ornamental trees that have been or are grown in temperate North American north of Mexico. Included is origin and date of first cultivation, etiology of both scientific names and common names, desireable and undesireable traits, description and maximum size, and remarkable facts.

Pictorial Library of Landscape Plants
This book is designed to illustrate ornamental and fruiting plants in typical landscape settings. Plants are arranged in braod plant categories and alphabetically by their botanical name wothin the category. Nutrition Sciences

Food & Nutrition Encyclopedia
An encyclopedia covering all aspects of food, nutrition and health. Article length is proportional with the complexity of the subject covered with the more complex subjects receiving lenghty discussions. Many articles are illustrated. Entries are arranged alphabetically.

Food Book: the Complete Guide to the Most Popular Brand Name Foods in the United States
Useable information about convience foods such as packaged breads, soups, cereals, and frozen dinners. Foods are arranged by categories and alphabetically by brand name within categories. The analysis listed includes ingredients, serving size, calories, protein (gm), carbohydrates, fat, sodium, cholesterol, fiber, and USRDA % of several nutrients and vitamins. Also, the nutritive value of the food is discussed and the additives are listed.

Garland Recipe Index
An index to recipes appearing in 48 popular and significant cookbooks during the late 1970's and early 1980's. Cookbooks had to be published within the 10 year period prior to 1984. Recipes are indexed by ingredient or recipe name and are categorized into four types, basic, foreign and ethnic, U.S. regional, and speciality like vegetarian or dietetic. The index refers the reader to the location of the recipe, the book it is published in and page numbers.

Handbook of Nutritive Value of Processed Food
A source of information on applied and experimental nutrition for humans, animals, microbes, and plants in tabular, narrative or graphical form. Sections include articles on processes, foods, feedstuffs, nutrients and nonnutrients, and diets for specific animals.

International Cookery Index
Cookbooks representing the broadest possible coverage were selected from the collections of the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Public Library, and bookstores in New York, Boston and Washington, D.C. The subject index lists ingredients, recipes, or regional recipes frrom 51 widely available cookbooks. The index refers the reader to the cookbook the recipe is in and it's page.

Oxford Companion to Wine
Over 3,000 alphabetical entries of wine related terms. the majority of the terms covered relate to wines, wine regions, oenology, viticulture, the history of wine, and specific wine varieties.

World Encyclopedia of Food
Quick, basic information about specific foods or beverages. Brief articles contain information about identification, description, discussions of where and how an item is eaten or drunk and what it tastes like. Historical, cultural, and literary material is added where possible.

Plant Pathology

Compendium of .... Diseases
A series of crop related publications by the American Phytopathological Society. The purpose of this series is to provide a thourogh, authoritative, and practical reference for plant pathologists and other agriculturalists engaged in diagnosing crop problems in the field or plant clinic laboratory. Almost 30 volumes comprise this set which covers most of the important agricultural and horticultural crops including; alfalfa, apple and pear, beans, corn, cotton, potato, wheat, soybean, stone fruits, etc.

Crop Protection Chemicals Reference
Comprehensive information on nearly 500 pesticides. The indexes included are; brand name quick index, manufacturer index, common and chemical name index, product category index, crop and non-crop use index, and pest use index. The major portion of the Crop Protection Chemicals Reference is the Product Labels. For most of the pesticides listed, the information listed includes; the active ingredient and percentage, precautions, directions for use, storage and disposal, special precautions, general information, mixing and application directions, crop recommendations, and disclaimer.

Dictionary of Plant Pathology
A bibliographical listing of authoritative names of plant pathgens. Additional entries include; biobraphy, crop names and pathology, disease names, disorders, fungicide names, specific epithets of bacteria and fungi, taxonomic groups, terminology, toxins, and vectors with the pathogens they transmit. References are given to Reviews of Applied Mycology or Review of Plant Pathology.

Elsevier's Dictionary of Pests and Diseases in Useful Plants
A multilanguage disctionary dealing with phytoparasites and zooparasites of useful plants and the diseases they can cause. The major topics include; bacteria, fungi and fungi imperfecti, insects and mites, lichens and mosses, molluscs, nematodes, noxious animals and birds, parasitic plants and weeds, symptoms of disease, and viruses and viroids. Environmental concepts which may be relevant to the plant kingdom include; acid rain, air pollution, deforestation, desertification, forest fire, greenhouse effect, soil erosion, etc.

Ortho Problem Solver
A listing of plant problems including how to diagnose a problem correctly, understanding what is causing it, and providing a solution. The major sections are plants and pests. In the plants section, plants are arranged by type and the common problems associated with each plant are shown including solutions. The pest section again is organized by type (of pest) and includes an illustration, a description of the problem, an analysis of the problem, and solutions.

Pesticide Manual Incorporating the Agrochemicals Handbook
A standard reference work on the active ingredients in products for the control of crop pests and diseases, weeds, animal ectoparasites and pests in public health. Also included are plant growth regulators, repellants, synergists, herbicide safeners, some timber preservatives, and beneficial microbial and invertebrate agents. Coverage for each material generally includes; nomenclature, physio-chemical properties, commercialization, applications, analysis, mammalian toxicology, exotoxicology, and environmental fate.

Westcott's Plant Disease Handbook
An extensive reference of plant diseases. Sections include; an alphabetical listing of garden chemicals, classification of plant pathogens, over 2,400 specific diseases and remedies, and over 1,200 host plants in alphabetical order listing the disease and it's control.
