GRANT PROPOSALS:
- Submitted a grant proposal in 1989 to the University Center for Energy Research
(UCER) entitled "Enhanced Access to Energy Related Publications". We
proposed to purchase the CD version of Compendex Plus (Engineering Index),
which provides good coverage of energy related publications. Using Compendex
and Current Contents on Disk, we proposed to provide a current awareness
update service for all UCER researchers and make Compendex Plus available to
all investigators and students. Our proposal was not funded.
- Submitted a grant proposal in 1997 to the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council with
Richard Paustenbaugh, Steve Folsom and Steven Locy. Our proposal was entitled
"An Internet-Based Subject Guide to Collections of Public and Academic Libraries
within the AMIGOS Region". We proposed to develop an Internet-based guide to
lesser known aspects of the collections of member libraries. Our proposal was
fully funded for $1,250.00.
- Submitted a grant proposal to the Faculty Fellowship Program for the Big 12 Universities. The
OSU Library is in the process of migrating from one Library Automation software
program to another. We will move from NOTIS to the Endeavor Voyager system during
the summer, 2000. My proposal will allow me to travel to Texas A&M University to
observe and work in their Interlibrary Loan office to see how they have handled the
migration from NOTIS to Endeavor. They made the move during the Fall, 1999 and will
have some experience with the system which we should find valuable. They also use
Clio as their Interlibrary Loan management program which we also use. Included in the
proposal was the purchase of ClioRequest which will allow us to automate the handling
of requests which come into Interlibrary Services via our web request forms. This
proposal was funded.
- Submitted a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation entitled: "A New Service and
Collection System for NSDL: Telebook Viewer" by Dr. Guoliang Fan (PI), Dr. Johnson Thomas (Co-PI),
Dr. Anne M. Prestamo (Co-PI), and Dr. Johnny Johnson (Co-PI). This project proposed modifying a book
page turner used by the disabled to capture and make available via the internet, using a standard
web browser, the text of monographic materials which would traditionally be sent by an Interlibrary
Loan unit via courier or postal service. This system would digitally capture the textual material
as a series of image files which would be viewable at a remote location. The viewer would be able
to control the display of sequential images (or pages) via buttons displayed on their web browser.
This system would be able to automatically capture and save the image files for an entire book within
a matter of minutes. These files would then be available to the viewer at a designated location using
a secure login process.
- Submitted a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation entitled: "Integration of Physical, Digital and
Personalized Libraries: the PDP Environment" by Dr. Guoliang Fan, Dr. Johnson Thomas, Dr. Anne M. Prestamo, and
Dr. Johnny Johnson, Oklahoma State University, Dr. Marios Angelides, Dr. George Ghinea, and Dr. Louis Lee, Brunel
University, UK, and Dr. Steve Maybank, University of Reading, UK. This project will be based on the telebook
viewer developed using the earlier National Science Foundation proposal, "A New Service and Collection System for
NSDL: Telebook Viewer". The telebook viewer system will allow for the on demand digitation of materials
requested by library patrons and allow the patron and library to accumulate of these materials for possible later
use, within copyright restrictions. The PDP Environment will convert requested materials to XML format to allow
patrons to personalize these materials with their own notes and indexing for later retrieval. We are calling
these collections of digital materials the VIABLE system for virtual and interactive adaptive e-book library
environment. The PDP Environment combines both the telebook viewer (TBV) and VIABLE into a coherent system which
can be individualized for each patron.
