Connection files allow users to conduct searches of some databases from within their EndNote software. The files contain the required login/password and other connection information to access the OSU-Stillwater Library's subscriptions.

Connection Files Download

The EndNote software you received from the Library included all of the connection files available from EndNote. This means there are many unnecessary files that can get in your way and slow down some program operations. We are now offering a .ZIP file with only the OSU-specific connection files.

File Updates

Any copy of EndNote received as of September 13, 2006 contains the OSU Customized Connection, Filter, and Style files that are available at that time. However, we recommend that you check back occasionally, as updated files are posted every few months.

NOTES:

• Before proceeding, make sure that you've closed EndNote.
• In these instructions, we refer to a folder called "EndNote." Each version of EndNote adds its number to this basic file name; i.e., "EndNote X1" or "EndNote 8." Select the EndNote folder that appears on your computer.

Updated ProQuest & WorldCat Connection Files 3/5/2007: If you received your copy of EndNote before March 5, 2007, you will need to install new connection files for ProQuest and WorldCat. If you wish to download only this file, you can do so here:

Web of Science Connection Files 1/8/2007: Due to a server issue at ISI, the Web of Science connection files only work when you are on the OSU-Stillwater campus. If you wish to use these connection files, you may download them here:

Download Instructions

In Internet Explorer:

1. Click your left mouse button on the above link. This will prompt you to open or save the file.
2. Click the Save button.
3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\EndNote and click the Save button. If you installed EndNote somewhere other than the default, navigate to the appropriate folder before saving.

In Netscape:

1. Click your left mouse button on the above link. This will prompt you to save the file.
2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\EndNote and click the Save button. If you installed EndNote somewhere other than the default, navigate to the appropriate folder before saving.

In Firefox:

1. Click your left mouse button on the above link. This will prompt you to open or save the file.
2. Select the radio button next to "Save to Disk" and click the OK button.
3. Open My Computer and navigate to your download folder (specified in your Firefox Options).
4. Copy the correct file and paste it in C:\Program Files\EndNote.

Installation Instructions

1. Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Program Files\EndNote\Connections
2. Copy any connection files you have edited previously and paste them to C:\Program Files\EndNote
3. Delete the C:\Program Files\EndNote\Connections folder
4. In C:\Program Files\EndNote, double-click on the .ZIP file you just downloaded. There are many differences in how machines handle .ZIP files, but the most common action is for this to unzip the file into a separate window containing a folder named "Connections."
5. Copy this folder and paste it into C:\Program Files\EndNote.

Creating connection files is an ongoing project. If you don't see a connection file for a database you wish to use, please contact Digital Library Services at 405-744-9161 (toll-free outside of Stillwater 877-744-9161), or email us at lib-dls@okstate.edu.

NOTE: We are currently unable to create a connection file for Science Direct as they have not implemented the necessary server architecture. The export function within Science Direct works very well, however.

Connection Instructions

To use a connection file to search a database, follow these steps:

1. Open EndNote, and then open the EndNote library where you wish to save retrieved records.
2. Click on "Tools - Connect" on the Menu Bar
3. Highlight the Connection you wish to use (for example OSU WebVoyage), and click on the "Connect" button.
4. Enter your search terms.
5. Search results will display in a new window.
6. Select the references you wish to save and click on the "Copy xx references to" button.
