The Center for Oklahoma Studies Symposium, Fall 2012
Dust Bowl Cabaret and Teacher's Workshop
Center for Oklahoma Studies
November 2 and 3, 2012
November 2, 2012, 7:00 pm
Dust Bowl Cabaret
Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library, Oklahoma State University campus
Come hear the 198 String Band as they present a multimedia experience centering on songs from the Dust Bowl. The members of the group -- Tom Naples, Michael Frisch, and Margaret Milliron -- are musicians and historians who are interested as much in the context of songs as in their content. They have uncovered archival versions of a number of little-known songs written by Dust Bowl survivors and migrants, and they have merged that music with historical images for a very moving presentation.
The Friday night performance will begin at 7:00 with a light reception, and music will start at 7:30. For more information on the 198 String Band and their previous presentations, visit http://www.musicfromthedepression.com/index.html
November 3, 2012, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
Location TBA, Oklahoma State University campus
The 198 String Band will present a half-day workshop designed to provide teachers with ideas for introducing musical and photographic resources into their classrooms. They will work with educators on various techniques for discussing music and images with students and will guide participants through hands-on exercises.
