Joe Anna Hibler

Joe Anna Hibler 2007 Inductee

Dr. Joe Anna Hibler was born May 5, 1939 in Shattuck, Oklahoma. She graduated from Leedey High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwestern State College, a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University, and her doctorate from the University of Oklahoma, all in business education. 

Dr. Hibler taught business at Altus High School and Altus Junior College for four years after graduating. She then went on to her alma mater Southwestern Oklahoma State University where she stayed for thirty-six years teaching business courses and working in a number of administrative positions, including four years as the Dean of the School of Business, four years as the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, and eleven years as President of the University. She was the first woman to serve as president of a university in Oklahoma for fifty-five years when she was appointed and only the second woman to ever hold this position. 

She serves on the boards of the Women’s Foundation of Oklahoma, where she serves as board chair, Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society, Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation, and the Wesley Foundation. She was appointed by the Governor in 2004 to serve on Board of Regents of Oklahoma Colleges and has served on many other boards throughout the years. She is a member of the Kiwanis Club and volunteers for the Early Bird Program at Burcham Elementary School and at the General Thomas P. Stafford Air and Space Museum.  

Dr. Hibler has received numerous recognitions for her commitment and achievements. She has been inducted into a number of hall of fames, including the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame in 2007, the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2003, the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 1994, as well as Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame, Western Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and Dewey County Historical Society Hall of Fame.  

Hibler has authored a number of publications and is a dynamic speaker, with speaking engagements all over the state.
