Jeanie Johnson, as Director of Library Media/ITV at the Oklahoma State Department of Education (SDE), provided technology and information literacy leadership. She earned a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma in 1989 while living in Broken Bow. President of the Oklahoma Library Association (OLA) in 2005-2006, she has been an active member of the OLA Executive Board, Program Committee, Legislative Committee, and Oklahoma Association of School Library Media Specialists (OASLMS).

As a new library media specialist (LMS) at Holly Creek Elementary, a K-8, 130 student dependent school in McCurtain County, Jeanie became acquainted with the Library Media Improvement (LMI) Grants, establishing a library. From there, Jeanie moved to Lukfata Elementary School, also a LMI recipient. Jeanie credits Oklahoma Legends Bettie Estes-Rickner and Barbara Spriestersbach, who were administering the LMI grants, as mentors. Another Oklahoma Legend, Dr. Mildred Laughlin, was critical to her development. These three encouraged her to be a change agent, a curriculum specialist, a leader, and to work integrally with the school curriculum.

Johnson next had the opportunity to work in three more LMI grant schools—Country Estates Elementary and Del City Elementary in Midwest City/Del City Public Schools as well as Choctaw Junior High. Using that experience, Johnson became a coordinator at the SDE’s Library Media Section. After working with the LMI program from 1992–1994, she and her colleagues developed a Teacher-to-Teacher program which provided intensive literacy training for library media specialists, empowering many to become technology leaders in their schools.

In 1996, Johnson left to work in the Norman Public Schools, yet returned to the State Department in 2000. Jeanie embarked upon a program to further integrate information literacy skills into the state’s curriculum documents, resulting in greater understanding of the importance of teacher/librarian collaboration.

Jeanie continues to be a library advocate as Reference/Instructional Librarian at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond.
