Ava Leota Miles was born in Iowa in 1878. She arrived in Oklahoma City with her family in 1901.
She later joined the Carnegie Library as Assistant Librarian in 1905 and held that position until
her marriage to John W. Hisel in 1913. During her tenure Miles was active in the Oklahoma Library
Association and attended several annual conferences. She died of heart failure hours after her election
to the presidency of the National Research Club in 1938 at the age of 60.
