Bob and Pat Segal Image

Bob Segal’s initial involvement with libraries in Oklahoma came in the mid-eighties with his appointment to the Choctaw Nation Multi-County Library Board, later the Southeastern Oklahoma Public Library System, and to the McAlester Public Library Advisory Board. He served on that board for about ten years and was its chairperson several times. He served for eight years on the system board for eight years. Bob designed an automated the payroll system which was in use for several years. In March of 1992 he was instrumental in founding the Friends of the McAlester Public Library (FOLOMAC) and still serves on its Board of Directors.

He was a delegate to the second Governor’s Conference on Libraries in 1990 and worked to develop an action plan for the betterment of Oklahoma libraries. Subsequently he was appointed by the President Pro Tem of the Oklahoma Senate Glenn Johnson to a committee charged with updating and rewriting various laws that dealt with Oklahoma libraries. A short time thereafter he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma (FOLIO). He still serves on that board in 2006. He served as Treasurer, Membership Chairperson, Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Vice-President and President for two terms. While he was President, FOLIO was awarded the prestigious Baker-Taylor Award for the best small friends group in the U.S.

His wife Patricia Segal joined him, faithfully attending meetings throughout this period and she was also elected to the FOLIO Board and served as Membership Chairperson, Secretary, and as a member of the Scholarship Committee. She also served on OLA’s Legislative Committee.

Bob was a member of OLA and ALA and they both attended national ALA conferences in Atlanta, Washington, DC, and San Francisco. They both attended National Library Day in Washington, in 1995. In OLA he served as Chairperson of the Audit Committee, and was a long-time member of OLA’s Legislative Committee. He was appointed to the ODL Steering Committee where he served several years. Both Pat and Bob regularly attended OLA’s Legislative Days at the Capitol, and OLA’s annual conferences. In 1995 Bob was selected as one of Oklahoma’s 10 Library Advocates. In 2003 both Pat and Bob were inducted into the FOLIO Hall of Fame.
