Clinton M. (Marty) Thompson, Jr. received a MLS from the University of Oklahoma (OU) Library School in 1972 and received a NIH Fellowship in health libraries at the University of Tennessee Medical Units from 1972-1973. After working at Eastern Virginia Medical School, he returned to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1976 to open the first library at the OU–Tulsa, College of Medicine. In 1980, he moved to the OU Bird Health Sciences Library as the Director. He has served on the OLA legislative, endowment, program, budget and finance, interlibrary loan cooperation, and nominating committees. In 1996-97, he served as president and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2006. He has been active in the Oklahoma Council of Academic Library Directors serving as chair in 1995-97. The Oklahoma Department of Libraries has asked him to serve on the Steering Committee for the Oklahoma Governor’s Conference on Libraries and Information Studies and the Oklahoma Library and Technology Network committee. His involvement with the Oklahoma Health Sciences Library Association has included program, nominating, and executive committees. He has participated in the OUSLIS Alumni Association and served on the student paper, 75th Diamond Jubilee Celebration, and executive committees and received the Award of Merit as the Outstanding Alumnus in 1990. He has been active in the South Central Chapter/ Medical Library Association serving as president in 1983 and receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1992. In 1998, he received the Michael E. DeBakey Library Services Outreach Award from the Friends of the National Library of Medicine. He was mentored by Francis Kennedy at Oklahoma City University Library.
