"I feel particularly privileged to be chosen as a library legend, but oddly unworthy of the compliment.
I presume I was chosen because I was the first chair of the Centennial Endowment Committee. The idea
for the endowment came up during a leadership conference while I was talking with another legend, Ann
Masters. The real credit goes to Kathryn Lewis, then president, who decided it was a good idea and needed
to be accomplished. After that, the committee members deserve all the credit. This honor is really theirs.
Frankly, I feel like a person who has been in a boat rowing with fifty other people. When we get where
we’re going and climb out onto the shore, somebody mistakenly gives me the credit for all the rowing
done by everyone else! This honor is a testament to all those librarians in the boat rowing hard. They
have created a legacy for all of us. Three cheers for them all!"
