Honorary Friends Memberships

It started with a simple question. “How can I sponsor my friends’ first membership in the Friends of the OSU Library?”

Sheila Parr, Friends Board member, wanted to introduce her friends to the Library and thought helping them join would be a great way to do that. Her question earlier this year spurred the creation of the new Honorary Friends Membership Program. Now, thanks to Sheila’s inspiration, your friends can become our Friends.

Sheila sponsored the first Honorary Friend Membership for the program. It was for her friend Lou Ann Skinner of Bothell, Washington.

Sheila said, “I am giving these as thank you gifts to my friends and family. It’s really a three-fold opportunity. It solved my dilemma of what to give. It will keep Lou Ann, an OSU alum, in touch with the University. And, it helps our wonderful Library.

“And as a bonus, it’s tax-deductible. I can’t go to Dillard’s and get a tax-deductible thank you gift!”

Honorary memberships start at the same level as the standard Friends membership, $50 per year. Honorary Friends will receive the same benefits as any other member.

All members of the Friends receive the fall and spring newsletter Perspectives, early notification of the H. Louise & H.E. “Ed” Cobb Speaker Series, and a book plated in their honor for every $50 donation. Beginning this year, Honorary Friends will also be recognized in the Fundraising and Development Annual Report.

Sheila Johnson, dean of libraries, is eager to begin the program. “We are always looking for ways to help our Friends introduce others to the Library and the wonderful programs we offer. Sheila had a great idea, and I think it’s going to work well. It’s a terrific way to build our membership and get new people excited about the Library.”

Like all gifts to the Library, Honorary Friend sponsorships are tax-deductible. To sponsor an Honorary Friend, fill out the form on the back of any issues of Perspectives and check the box for “Honorary Friend Membership."
