At the Library, each November begins with the H. Louise & H.E. “Ed” Cobb Speaker Series. For fifteen years this event has served as the annual fundraiser for the Friends of the OSU Library.
This event is made possible every year through the generosity of the Cobb family. In 1994, Mr. Cobb and his three children established an endowment to fund a speaker for the Friends of the OSU Library banquet. Beginning in 1995 the event was named after Mrs. Cobb.
After Mr. Cobb passed away in 1999, his children chose to honor both parents by renaming the event the H. Louise & H.E. “Ed” Cobb Speaker Series. The family of Louise and Ed have continued the couple’s legacy of supporting the OSU Library.
Each year the Cobbs sponsor a table at the dinner and the children and grandchildren of Louise and Ed attend the event. Patrick Cobb has served on the Friends of the OSU Library Board of Directors since 2003, and has recently made significant gifts to increase the endowment that supports the event.
In a 2004 interview, Patrick Cobb said, “I became involved in the library because of my mother’s interest. I wish to honor her memory and contribute what I can to Oklahoma State. I have always enjoyed the Friends dinner and expect to find other interesting projects and events as I increase my participation by being on the Board.”
Funds from the H. Louise & H.E. “Ed” Cobb Lecture Series Endowment are used to pay the speaker fees for the authors featured at the event. The growing endowment means the Friends will be able to continue hosting prestigious authors. The Friends have been honored to feature Ken Burns, S.E. Hinton, Doris Kerns Goodwin, and Kurt Vonnegut just to name a few. The 2005 Speaker Series on November 4 features Frank Deford, author of fourteen books, senior writer at Sports Illustrated, NPR commentator and regular on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.
