Three Oklahoma State University Library employees won the 1999 Friends of the OSU Library's Edna Mae Phelps Award. La Dawn Conner, Lisa Fain and Sherry Fletcher were honored at the recent Friends annual speaker series featuring Pulitzer Prize-winner Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Phelps Award recognizes individuals who have substantially and unselfishly gone above and beyond duty to increase the effectiveness of the OSU Library. Although a three-way tie , the recipients have worked as a team this year to plan and execute a variety of events celebrating the OSU Library's "Year of the Two-Millionth Volume."

The nominating letter for Conner, stack management coordinator, stated that she improved retention among student assistants by developing an innovative training and evaluation program for her staff. She also could be counted on to set for various events quickly and quietly without disturbing library users.

Financial coordinator, Fain, was honored for not only her superior day-to-day administration of a multi-million-dollar budget, but also volunteering to assist with planning and coordinating of special events and fund-raising activities.

Fletcher is the coordinator for library publications and communications. She has been instrumental in promoting the H. Louise Cobb and the Friends of the OSU Library Speakers series and the OSU Library's Two-Millionth-Volume celebration. She developed the Friends web site, which the 1999 international meeting of the Academic Library Advancement and Development Network named the "best of the best" for content, design and positive image.

The Phelps Award was established in honor of Phelps of Seminole, who is a strong supporter of the OSU Library. While serving on the OSU Board of Regents, she worked to improve the Library's budget. She also played an active role in organizing the Friends of the OSU Library and served as its first president.

The award is given every year at the H. Louise & H.E. "Ed" Cobb Speaker Series. Recent recipients include Jill M. Holmes of Stillwater, H. E. "Ed" Cobb Jr. of Tulsa and Robert S. Kerr, Jr. of Oklahoma City.
