The Friends of the OSU Library selected Bob and Lou Kerr of the Kerr Foundation of Oklahoma as the recipients of the third annual Edna Mae Phelps Award. The award was presented at the recent H. Louise Cobb and the Friends of the OSU Library 1996 Speaker Series. The Kerr's son, Robert Kerr III, accepted the plaque on behalf of his parents who could not attend.
"The Kerrs believe strongly in publicly supported, service-oriented libraries as demonstrated by the $500,000 Challenge Grant they generously initiated to the OSU Library in 1990," Edna Mae Phelps, first president of the Friends, says.
Because of the grant, the Library Endowment grew nearly sevenfold, three endowed professorships were established, and many other gifts were made possible. The grant was used to purchase 11,000 books, which contributed to the Library improving in the ARL ratings.
