Student, Staffer, Librarian, Friend: The Friends Foster a Career

Misty Smith

Misty Smith has played nearly every role one can at the OSU Library: undergraduate, student assistant, staff member, librarian and Friend.

While Misty completed her BS in apparel merchandising, she worked as a library student assistant first in the circulation department, then in reserves. She left the Library to complete her internship, but returned a year later when she decided to pursue a masters degree in library science. Misty worked as a library technician in the bindery as she completed her MLIS at OU. A few months after graduation, she accepted a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Library’s Special Collections and University Archives. Misty recently moved to a position as Assistant Professor in the cataloging department.

Misty said the Library was a great student job. "It was nice to be in the Library. When you needed to do research, you were always here. Working as an assistant was a great way to learn how to use the Library. I think our employees are more library-savvy than the average student."

Obviously, the Library made a great impression on her. Her work as a student assistant inspired her to pursue a career as a librarian. "I always loved working here. This place has felt like a second home; why wouldn’t you want to work someplace like that? Everything just clicked here. The way things work in a library just fits my personality."

A dedicated Library employee, Misty was honored for her work multiple times. The awards she received were established by Library donors. In 2001, Misty won the James B. & Verena Wise Outstanding Student Assistant Award. The Wises established the scholarship in 1990 to encourage outstanding performance by student workers in the OSU Library and to provide some assistance to students supporting themselves through school.
In both 2003 and 2004, Misty received the Mary Greenberg/Marguerite Howland Personnel Development Award. Emeritus librarian Jill Holmes established this award to honor Mary Greenberg and Marguerite Howland, former library employees. The award is given to full-time library employees for work-related higher education. Misty used the award to help finance her library science degree.

The Friends of the OSU Library have directly impacted Misty’s education, not just through the awards they provide to outstanding employees, but also through the programs the group supports for all students. Now, Misty returns the favor. She recently joined the Friends of the OSU Library herself.

Like several Library employees who are members of the Friends, Misty chooses to donate directly to the Greenberg/Howland Endowment. Gifts like Misty’s continue to grow the endowment, so each year more employees can receive the scholarship.

"I won the Greenberg/Howland, and I know how much it helped me. I want to be able to give back so someone else can have the same opportunity."
