DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES

Depository libraries are those libraries specifically designated by the U.S. Government Printing Office to receive and make available U.S. government publications through the Federal Depository Library Program. There are close to 1,400 Federal depository libraries located throughout the United States and its territories, with at least one in every Congressional District. All provide free public access to the great extent of federal government information, in both print and electronic formats. The authority for the Depository Library Program is in Title 44, Chapter 19 of the United States Code. For more information see Library Services.

[arrow] Depository Libraries in Oklahoma

There are two Regional Depository libraries and 18 Selective Depository libraries in the State of Oklahoma. The Regional libraries, the Oklahoma State University Library and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries receive and make available all materials distributed for public dissemination by the U.S. Government Printing Office. The Selective libraries receive and make available a percentage of the available information.

The Selective depository libraries in Oklahoma City and Tulsa area are:

Metropolitan Library System
Oklahoma City University

Tulsa City-County Library
University of Tulsa, McFarlin Library
University of Tulsa, Law Library

Federal publications that are of interest to you for this class:
Congressional / legislative publications (Congressional bills, hearings, committee prints, documents, reports, laws, the Congressional Record) and
Regulatory publications (Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations), are available in depository libraries in paper or microfiche format. Recent publications are also available electronically. See note below.
One Committee Print of note is the Green Book, which contains background material and data on the programs within the jurisdiction of the Committee on Ways and Means (Social Security, Medicare, Aid to Needy Families, Child Support and Child Care, etc.) (Y 4.W 36: 104/). It is a biennial publication. For online access see House Committee on Ways and Means Committee Prints.

The last 20 years or so of the above materials are available electronically via Congressional Universe (see below), and this is the focus of this class. To access older material, see the Congressional Indexes, 1789-1969 section of Congressional Universe or check with depository libraries for their holdings in paper or microfiche format.
