Technology Issues

[grey box] Building America's Information Technology Workforce
The U.S. Depart. of Commerce, partly as a result of the response to its recently published _America's New Deficit: The Shortage of Information Technology Workers_ has created this site to aid in building and maintaining an information technology workforce. The key to the site is an IT work force program database, which lists education, employment, and training programs. The database is searchable by type of program, geography, sponsorship agency, and keyword. For an overview of the over 170 programs in the database at present, simply click on the Search button without using any of the options.

The U.S. National Coordination Office for Computing, Information, and Communications has issued this report concerning "future directions for Federal support of research and development in high performance computing, communications, information technology, and the Next Generation Internet." PITAC has concluded that federal support of information technology is inadequate and generally short-sighted. Their 60-page report is divided into five major sections that first overview information technology, and then discuss federal research priorities, potential focal points, and the implementation and management of new initiatives.

The list covers "persons who died as a result of hostilities in Korea, 1950-57, including those who died while missing or captured." CER has created state casualty lists from the larger list. The lists can be browsed by state, and then alphabetically by last name or "'home of record,' as identified by the serviceman upon last entrance into military service." Army casualties list home of record by county within state. The other three branches of the military list by city/town within state. Each record contains the soldier's name, rank, branch of service, home city/town or county, state, date of death, and cause of death. At present the database contains 33,642 names. Unfortunately, the list is not searchable at this time.

The title of this collection is "Correlated and Uncorrelated Information Relating to Missing Americans in Southeast Asia."
