Patents, trademarks, and copyright are included under the term intellectual property, or property that results from original creative thought. Intellectual property can be protected under federal law.
Patents
Patents are administered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) http://www.uspto.gov/ and the OSU Library is a Patent and Trademark Depository Library. Patents give access to technical information not found in traditional literature searches.
- To find the full-text of a registered or pending U.S. patent, go to http://www.pat2pdf.org/ and type in the number. The site will retrieve the patent in .pdf.
- To locate the full-text of a registered or pending patent in other countries, go to http://ep.espacenet.com/ and type in the publication or application number using the Advanced search.

Trademarks
Trademarks are also administered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. They are a word, name, symbol, or device that identifies the good/service of one entity from a good/service of another in interstate commerce.

Copyright
Copyright is handled by the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress http://www.copyright.gov/. Copyright protection is given to printed works, software, artwork, photo, video, software, and practically everything on the Internet, once “fixed in any tangible medium of expression.” Find information, register, and search copyrights at http://www.copyright.gov/.
