Mark Your Calendars: National Book Award Winner, Tim Egan on April 12

The Library is joining with the History Department, Kirkpatrick Foundation and the College of Arts and Sciences to bring Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist and author Timothy Egan to campus. Egan will discuss his book “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl.” The lecture and book signing will be held April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room. The event is free and open to the public.

In 2006, Egan won the National Book Award for this work which has been described as a “can’t-put-it-down history.” He tells the epic story of the environmental disaster of the Dust Bowl and its impact on communities.

Steinbeck gave a voice to Oklahomans who fled the state in “The Grapes of Wrath.” Egan’s is the story of those who stayed and survived, and it is an extraordinary account of endurance and heroism. In an era that promises ever-greater natural disasters, “The Worst Hard Time” is a powerful cautionary tale about the dangers of trifling with nature.

This event has been added to “The Big Read” series, making it an official Oklahoma Centennial event.

OSU Library Catalog Returns After Unexpected Downtime

Unexpected downtime of the OSU Library Catalog is infrequent. However, a disk failure resulted in no access to OSU Library’s Catalog from February 9 to 12. The OSU Library Catalog system operates on a server maintained by IT. The failed drive was located on a new Sun server which was installed last August.

During the Catalog downtime, access to the full-text journals and databases was uninterrupted. A backup system was used to check out and return Library materials. Alternatives to the OSU Library Catalog were linked to the Library’s homepage. These alternatives can be used to determine if we own a book and the book's approximate call number.

University IT technicians worked double and triple shifts to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. Sun Systems couriered a new disk drive on Sunday, and the operating system was completely reloaded, making the Catalog available by 1 a.m. Tuesday, February 13.

No data in the Library system was lost; the only data loss was associated with the operating system.

Another outage occurred on Sunday, February 18. This outage was briefer and was due to a backup process that did not complete.

According to Darlene Hightower, IT Chief Information Officer, IT staff are working with Library staff to conduct a full review of the system failure and restoration. A report of the findings will be made available once it is completed.

Library Quick Tip: The OSU Library Catalog and Library Web site are on separate servers. Bookmarking both pages will ensure you can access one if the other is down.

Congratulations to Participants in the 2007 Celebrating Books by OSU Authors

On February 1, the Library hosted the inaugural “Celebrating Books by OSU Authors.” The event recognizes OSU employees who have authored, co-authored or edited a book in 2005 or 2006. This years’ participants included John Acken, Cokie Anderson, Lee Bird, Bob Darcy, Renee Daugherty, Sidney Ewing, William Focht, Jami Fullerton, Toni Graham, Todd Hubbard, Jason Lavery, David Moll, Jennifer Paustenbaugh, Donna Rhea, Peter Rollins, Larry Sanders, Allen Scott, Joey Senat, Ravi Sheorey, Peter Shull, Martin Wallen, Sue Williams, John Womack and John Wooley.

The purpose of “Celebrating Books by OSU Authors” is to recognize and honor these individuals’ achievements, encourage academic dialogue, and ensure that works by OSU authors are available to the University community by adding these pieces to the OSU Library’s collection. Our participant list this year is by no means an exhaustive list of book authors at OSU. Next year’s event will spotlight books published in 2006 and 2007. If your work falls into this category, please let us know. We want to include you in the 2008 event.
