Cobb Speaker Series features Michael Wallis

The 2006 H. Louise & H.E. “Ed” Cobb Speaker Series will be held November 3 at the Edmon Low Library. The 15th annual library fundraiser features best-selling author and award-winning reporter, Michael Wallis. Wallis is a historian and biographer of the American West and has also gained notoriety as a speaker and voice talent. You may recognize him as the voice of the sheriff in the Disney Pixar movie Cars.

The event includes a welcome reception at 6 p.m. and dinner in the Library’s Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room at 6:30 p.m. After dinner, Wallis will speak and take questions from the audience. A signing reception will follow. Seating is limited and reservations must be made by October 25. Individual tickets are $75, and half the cost is tax-deductible. Call (405) 744-7331 for more information.

College Students’ Perceptions of Libraries:
Presentation Nov. 8

George Needham of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) will be the second presenter in the Library Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series. Needham will present “College Students’ Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources” on November 8 at 9:30 a.m. the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room.

Today’s students learn and interact differently than previous generations of students. Needham will discuss their views on libraries, awareness and use of library electronic resources, the Internet search engine, the library and the librarian, free vs. for-fee information, and the “Library” brand. The presentation is based on the 2005 OCLC report on college students’ perceptions.

Seminar Educates Students About Plagiarism

Dr. Johnny Johnson, Interlibrary Services Librarian and Head of Access Services, is encouraging academic integrity while educating students about plagiarism with a seminar titled “Plagiarism in Academia.”

“The primary goal of the seminar is to instill a general awareness of plagiarism and that it is not a remote academic problem. It can happen at OSU. I talk about the different types of plagiarism, as well as some of the causes and how to rectify those causes,” he said.

Johnson gave his most recent seminar to a graduate level nutritional science class. The seminar lasts about one hour and is available for all classes.

For more information about plagiarism or to inquire about scheduling a seminar, contact Dr. Johnny Johnson at 405-744-9728 or at johnny.johnson@okstate.edu. For resources concerning plagiarism and how to avoid it, visit http://www.library.okstate.edu/access/ils/plagiarism.htm.

Subject Specialist Librarians

Each department at OSU has its own subject specialist librarian. Members of the faculty are encouraged to contact their subject specialist librarian anytime they have a question about the OSU Library or its resources, research, or material purchase requests.

You can find your librarian’s contact information at www.library.okstate.edu/services/liaisons.htm.
