Seminar Educates Students about Plagiarism

Dr. Johnny Johnson, Interlibrary Services Librarian and Head of Access Services, is encouraging academic integrity while educating students about plagiarism with a seminar titled “Plagiarism in Academia.”

“The goal of the seminar is to instill a general awareness of plagiarism and that it is not a remote academic problem. It can happen at OSU. I talk about the different types of plagiarism, as well as some of the causes and how to avoid potential charges of plagiarism,” he said.

The seminar lasts about one hour and can be tailored for all classes. For more information about plagiarism or to inquire about scheduling a seminar, contact Dr. Johnny Johnson at 405-744-9728 or at johnny.johnson@okstate.edu. For resources concerning plagiarism and how to avoid it, go to http://www.library.okstate.edu/access/ils/plagiarism.htm.

Textbooks Initiative

Research libraries don’t typically purchase undergraduate textbooks. However, the OSU Library has launched a textbook initiative in an attempt to assist those students who can’t afford to purchase all of their textbooks.

In 2006-2007, the Library purchased a copy of each textbook for classes with enrollment of 250 or more. This fall, we expanded and purchased textbooks for classes of 150 or more as well as textbooks costing $150 or more. These books are on 2-hour reserve at the Circulation Desk. To view the status of these books, search by title or author in either the OSU Library "Classic Catalog" or BOSS.

What You Can Do To Help

If textbooks for your class are on reserve, please let your students know. If your textbook is not on reserve and you would like it to be, you can temporarily place a personal copy on reserve for students to use. The book will be returned to you at the end of the semester. Donations of textbooks are also appreciated. You may even consider requesting a library copy when negotiating with your publisher.

Tell Your Students: BOSS

Many students first discover Library resources and services because a professor brought it to their attention. This month we encourage you to tell your students about the new catalog interface, BOSS.

The BOSS: Big Orange Search System is a new interface for the OSU Library Catalog (now the Classic Catalog). This intuitive new interface makes searching easy with a single search box and suggestions for refining or broadening your results. When available, BOSS even has book jackets and summaries.

Try it out at http://boss.library.okstate.edu/. Keep an eye on this cool new tool; BOSS will be adding new tricks over the coming semesters.
