NEWS RELEASE

“The Big Read” is coming to the OSU Library…are you ready?

March 8, 2007

For Immediate Release

STILLWATER - During March and April, the Stillwater community has the opportunity to participate in a program designed to help restore reading to the center of American culture by reading and discussing The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

The Big Read,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, is designed to provide citizens with the opportunity to read a single book and discuss within their communities.

Stillwater was selected for the program in response to a grant proposal co-written by Karen Neurohr, OSU Library Assessment Librarian, and Linda Reynolds, Director of the Stillwater Public Library. Stillwater is one of two community groups in Oklahoma and one of 72 communities nationwide chosen to participate.

“We selected The Grapes of Wrath, first of all, for its literary merit and, second, to commemorate the Oklahoma Centennial by examining the historical events of the time period and the changing image of Oklahoma. 'The Big Read' in Stillwater is an official Oklahoma Centennial Program,” Neurohr said.

Book discussions will be taking place all across Stillwater. The OSU Library will host two: Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room, Edmon Low Library, and Thursday, April 12 at noon in the Dean’s Conference Room, Edmon Low Library. To see a schedule of other Stillwater events, including speakers, movies and music, visit www.library.okstate.edu/news/calendar.htm.

Anyone who signs up for one of “The Big Read’s” discussions can receive a free copy of the book and a reading guide by contacting Karen Neurohr at 405-744-2376 or karen.neurohr@okstate.edu. Those interested in hosting or leading a discussion group can also receive a free audio guide.
