For Immediate Release
STILLWATER - When Dan Chaney joined the Mountain Plains Library Association (MPLA) in 1996, he said he did not realize how much the association would impact his life. At the first conference he attended, Chaney left holding a chair position.
In 1998, Chaney began serving the MPLA as webmaster, a position he has held for 11 years. MPLA has only had an established online presence for 12 years.
MPLA benefits librarians and libraries by holding conferences, awarding grants for independent research and creating a network of like-minded professionals, Chaney explained.
"MPLA is a lot like the American Library Association, except on a much smaller scale," Chaney said. "It makes it easier to put names with faces and to meet and have similar goals and interests."
The Carl Gaumer Library Champion Award is ".to be given to the individual or company whose positive support of the Mountain Plains Library Association is demonstrated by constant conscientious endeavors towards libraries, library staff, trustees, and professional activities."
MPLA President 2004 Carol Hammond nominated Chaney for the award, citing his work as "a lasting legacy to MPLA, and something that has changed [MPLA] for the better forever."
In her nomination letter to Award Committee members, Hammond wrote, "I simply can't imagine how MPLA would be where it is today without [Chaney's] impressive, outstanding contribution."
The MPLA is a 12-state association of librarians, library paraprofessionals and friends of libraries, which includes Oklahoma. Its purpose is to promote the development of librarians and libraries by providing significant educational and networking opportunities.
