For Immediate Release

STILLWATER -The culture of Japan has been represented in America by movies and television for years. The differences between what is seen in popular culture and what truly is can be difficult to discern.

The OSU Library recently received 38 books about Japan from the Nippon Foundation. Helen Clements, Associate Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, said the gift completes the Library's collection of 100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan.

“It will help us educate Americans, and our guests from other countries, about the rich history and culture of Japan and Japan’s role in the contemporary world,” Clements said.

These carefully selected contemporary books, written by experts in their respective fields, cover Japanese politics, government, international relations, economics, business, society, culture, literature, the arts and history. The books are specifically chosen to help non-experts gain a basic understanding of Japan.

The Nippon Foundation was established in 1962 as a non-profit philanthropic organization, active both in Japan and abroad. The foundation's fundamental aim is the realization of a peaceful and prosperous global society, in which none need struggle to secure their basic human rights. More information about the Nippon Foundation can be found at www.nippon-foundation.or.jp/eng.
