BACKGROUND:

The Oklahoma State University Library seeks a highly motivated professional to lead the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program. The goal of the Program is documenting and making accessible the history of Oklahoma and OSU through oral history interviews. The Library is soliciting applicants with extensive oral history experience for this tenure-track position. The Program has ongoing projects exploring the lives and contributions of Oklahomans from all walks of life, available through an extensive online presence. Some exciting projects, past and present, include: The “Big Top” Show Goes On, Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Centennial Farm Families, and Oklahoma Women of the Dust Bowl.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Head of the Oklahoma Oral History Research Program will provide leadership for the Program and serve as a professional oral historian, participating in research, outreach, and teaching endeavors within a land-grant institution. We seek a dynamic and innovative individual with an established reputation for oral history scholarship and practice who can conceptualize and lead a comprehensive oral history program in an academic library setting and who can develop and execute oral history projects with a focus on Oklahoma.

The successful candidate will direct the activities of library faculty in the Program as they work toward reappointment, promotion, and tenure and will provide supervision to professional staff, graduate assistants, student employees, and interns. He/she will also work collaboratively with other library public service units, Digital Library Services departments, and the broader campus and state-wide communities to extend the reach of the Program’s collections.

Responsibilities will also include:

  • Planning, assessment, and oversight of Departmental services and programs
  • Overseeing the creation and processing of interviews and the development of appropriate metadata and databases
  • Promoting the use of OOHRP materials through outreach and relevant programming initiatives
  • Overseeing Program preservation and disaster planning activities
  • And working with development staff on solicitation plans and stewardship activities for special collections donors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications: (Please address these qualifications in your application materials.)

  • MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent advanced degree in a related field.
  • Extensive professional experience in an academic or public oral history program.
  • Exceptional core competencies including leadership, communication, and organization
  • Working knowledge of current oral history technology and digital archival standards and experience with digital access to oral history materials
  • Ability to build successful working relationships with a wide variety of people.
  • Knowledge of and experience with legal and ethical standards within oral history.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Significant contributions to the advancement of oral history practice and/or theory and recognition by peers on the national level.
  • Experience in a land-grant institution.
  • A record of developing successful grant proposals and projects.
  • Experience directing graduate student research.

SALARY/BENEFITS::

This 12-month, tenure track position reports to the Associate Dean for Special Collections. $75,000 minimum for 12 months. Oklahoma State University offers faculty a full health and retirement package, and support and opportunity for scholarly/professional development.
