SCVUGM 2007 Conference Program *schedule may change
Wednesday Preconference MS Access Basics and Relational Theory and Reporting in Access -- This workshop takes a Voyager user from knowing nothing about writing SQL queries to being able to write queries and using the BLOB. It is a quick overview of the complete "Voyager Writing Queries" world. For anyone who has wished they could write queries to get information out of Voyager, this is the session to get you off the ground and writing queries. Michael North, Kansas State University Cataloger's Toolkit (morning session) -- Attendees will learn how to use the cataloger's toolkit, a program that simplifies cataloging tasks by connecting to the Voyager database and automating many procedures. (For a broader notion of the toolkit's capabilities, see the online documentation: http://www.library.northwestern.edu/ctkv/). Attendees will also learn how to use programs directly related to the cataloger's toolkit to perform batch corrections to headings in bibliographic records. Gary Strawn, Northwestern University(For a description of heading changes see "MakingChangestoHeadings.doc" at http://www.library.northwestern.edu/public/CorrectionReview/ ). BatchCat Interface (afternoon Session) -- Attendees will learn about the BatchCat interface (part of the Voyager system), which allows programmers to create tools that update the Voyager database. Examples will be provided of programs both simple and complex that use the BatchCat interface to create, modify and delete Voyager records. Audience: Technical Services Staff; Programmers and Systems Staff. Gary Strawn, Northwestern University Macro Express 101 -- An expanded version of the popular Macro Express 101 session that was presented at EndUser 2007. The morning will be spent getting acquainted with Macro Express (A Windows Automation Tool). Macro Express is a powerful tool that can save you time and keystrokes as well as improve accuracy. If you don't know what a marco is, or if you have dipped your toes into the shallow end of the macro express pool, or if you jumped into the deep end of writing Macro Express macros and things did not go quite as you expected, the morning session is designed for you! The afternoon portion of the workshop will be a round table format for all the attendees to share ideas and solve problems. This session is limited to 12 participants so that everybody can have hands on experience on Macro Express. Clyde Putman, Southern Methodist University Thursday Sessions Voyager Update with Mike Dicus -- Mike Dicus (Ex Libris Voyager Product Manager) will join the conference to give SCVUGM a product update about Voyager. Ex Libris: Vision and Strategy & An Introduction to Primo -- Join the Ex Libris team as they share with you the company's vision for serving the ever changing platform of library innovations and their strategy to enhance the library's use of technology in assisting the new generation of library users with several products including Primo the one-stop solution for the discovery and delivery of local and remote resources, such as books, journal articles, and digital objects. Primo assists libraries in exposing the richness of their collections and engaging users with an up-to-date discovery and delivery experience. Jumping in With Both Feet: An Aquabrowser Implementation Tale -- This presentation will describe Oklahoma State University-Stillwater's implementation of Aquabrowser in Summer 2007. OSU is offering the Aquabrowser interface to its patrons as an alternative to the "classic" WebVoyage interface. The presentation will cover the implementation timeline, division of implementation responsibilities, feature tour and future plans. As well as showing features in the public view, a portion of the presentation will cover the Administrative Control Panel. Anne Prestamo, Oklahoma State University Cost Per Use Journal Reports-Entering and Pulling Information from the Voyager Acquisitions Module -- This presentation will explore how to utilize data entered into the Voyager Acquisitions module to produce a journal report. It will detail: 1. what data is entered into the module 2. the queries used in pulling the report 3. how to manipulate the resulting data into a finished report that shows cost per use of journal title subscriptions, including electronic subscriptions. Beverly Dowdy and Scott Logan University of Central Oklahoma Ex Libris: Verde Demonstration and Overview -- Those interested in managing their entire electronic collection will be interested in attending an overview and demonstration of Verde. The Verde electronic resource management system assists libraries in all aspects of e-resource management. Verde collects and displays detailed information about a library's collection and also brings new resources and other products available in the electronic product marketplace to the attention of the library, thereby serving a key role in ongoing collection development. For consortia, the Verde system enables authorized staff to search across consortium members, to share data with them, and to provide many types of consortium reports. Ex Libris: MetaLib and SFX Demonstration and Overview -- MetaLib provides
a consolidated search environment for remote information resources, helping users
find the information they need quickly and effectively. MetaLib streamlines the
discovery process by presenting users with content from multiple information providers
in one clear, familiar user interface. By eliminating the need to learn different
search methods and interfaces, MetaLib transforms the user experience from tiring
to inspiring. Also learn about SFX: the original OpenURL link
resolver - is an innovative tool for interconnecting library-controlled resources
and services. SFX provides users with context-sensitive links to services that
librarians define on the basis of their institution's e-collections and policies. New Tool for Catalog Management -- A new tool, which uses as input either the cataloging error reports generated by the Voyager system or its own error reports, assists a cataloger in resolving conflicts among Voyager records (authority/authority, authority/Bibliographic and bibliographic/bibliographic). The tool presents the records involved in a conflict together with tools that in most cases allow a problem to be resolved with a few clicks. Audience: primarily technical services staff. Gary Strawn Slicing and Dicing with Pivot Tables: How Pivot Tables can be used to analyze data in Excel and Access -- Pivot tables make analyzing data a cinch, but they are often feared and under used. This introductory session will introduce users to Pivot Tables and their uses. Kathryn Broad, Oklahoma City University Law Library Webvoyage with a Wrapper -- A "wrapper" script allows a Voyager customer site to work around some of the constraints presented by the black-box nature of the WebVoyáge server-side binary executables. This presentation will show some of the things that can be accomplished as well as the pros and cons of this approach. Although somewhat technical in nature, this overview session will be of interest to anyone that is considering using a wrapper script. Michael Doran University of Texas at Arlington Ex Libris Indepth: All your Questions Answered --
Still have questions? Didn't have time to really look indepth at the products previously
discussed? Have individualized questions for the Ex Libris staff? Now is your chance
to meet individually or in a small group to get those questions answered and to
see specific products indepth. Ex Libris Staff Friday Sessions EBSCO -- Come learn about the new enhancement features to EBSCOhost as well as new databases in the areas of Applied Science, Nursing, Business and History. Jill Mason, Matt Borne, and Kirk Gordon, EBSCO Bulk Importing and Deleting NetLibrary Records using MarcEdit and BibDelete -- This presentation will look at the entire process for bulk importing and deleting NetLibrary records to and from a Voyager 6.2 catalog. The presenter will describe the processes to (1) download NetLibrary Marc records from OCLC; (2) edit records using MarcEdit by Terry Reese; (3) configure Voyager mapping for bulk importing records into the catalog; (4) create a text file of the Bibliographic IDs; and (5) install, configure and run BibDelete (by Gary Strawn) to remove bibliographic records and their associated holdings and item records. Attendees will be able to view NetLibrary records as they appear in Texas Lutheran University's Catalog. Sally Carroll-Ricks Texas Lutheran University Circulation's Best Friend: Microsoft Access Reports -- Tracking overdue items and placing bursar holds for items that are long overdue can be a nightmare. Voyager can be set to automatically send overdue notices and Oklahoma City University (OCU) sends three, but soon realized that some items were not being returned even after a third overdue notice was sent and we needed a way to track this information. We were also having problems with students returning ILL items late, sometimes after another library had already billed us for the item. We needed the system to automatically send out notices and make them a part of the late item tracking system for OCU owned items. At the end of each semester we place a transcript hold on anyone that has overdue items, ILL or otherwise. The problem we kept running into was students returning items in the drop box and not notifying us that they needed the transcript hold removed. OCU has developed a strategy where Microsoft Access does all the work and the library staff just has to review reports! We also wrapped all three problems into one procedure. Beth Jones Oklahoma City University Using Voyager's Access Reports to Document Selector Requests and Manage Selector Budgets in a Small Academic Library -- Hear how a small academic library learned to use Access Reports to track selector requests and manage selector budgets from order creation and fund commitment through invoicing, item receipt and processing. See examples of the reports and learn about the fund structure and the processes used to support the selection function. Ylanda Copeland and Mary MacWithey, Schreiner University Dynamic Mapping: Wichita State -- In this session, presenters from Wichita State University will discuss their implementation of dynamic library location maps in WebVoyage. This feature provides customized map displays in the online public access catalog. After selecting a search result, patrons are given the option to view a dynamic (or interactive) map that displays directional information including the library branch, floor on which the resource may be found, what direction to turn after exiting the elevator, department location, and general location of the shelving range. Maps are suitable for printing, and even provide a linking option for electronic resources. The presenters discuss how the dynamic mapping project evolved, the programming logic developed by Hongfe Li, Sai Deng's map creation, how to transfer data from the WebVoyage display to the processing program, how to combine data with the Voyager tables, and implementation instructions. WSU's dynamic mapping feature was first introduced to the Voyager community at the 2007 EndUser conference. We will review developments since the conference and discuss future enhancements. Nancy Deyoe, Sai Deng, and Erik Malloy Wichita State University SWETS: Swets' exciting new e-products: Simplifying how you acquire, access and manage your resources We will demonstrate how the all-new SwetsWise Subscriptions Library Edition offers the most comprehensive subscriptions management and procurement service currently available. Attendees will learn about new functionality and see first-hand how its "dashboard" places your library's entire collection at your fingertips. We will also show SwetsWise Searcher-our new hosted Federated Search service-and its unique Content Mining capability, demonstrating how it guides users to build the most effective search query for the most relevant results. Norene Allen, SWETS Staying in the Black! Ending the fiscal year with a Bang, not a Whimper -- Learn how a small academic library used Voyager Access Reports to Monitor Transaction Accuracy and Fund Balances, reconcile accounts with vendors and the University Business Office, Keep Selectors informed and do a very successful Fiscal Period Close Procedure. Report examples will be included. Ylanda Copeland and Mary MacWithey, Schreiner University Voyager (Access SQL) Reporting Problems EXPOSED -- This session covers some Relational Database Theory needed to understand why some things go wrong with Voyager Access SQL reporting queries. In most cases, solutions will be provided. Not a beginning "how to" session but more for moderate/advances users, a "Why did it not work" session. Michael North Fighting Cyber Pirates and Winning, So We Thought: The Saga Continues -- This session will demonstrate how to secure your EZProxy server and improve troubleshooting efforts by implementing detailed authentication logging. Attendees will see how the EZProxy login process can be programmed to authenticate against two different data sources: The Voyager Patron Database and your campus' Active Directory. Prevent future hacking attempts and identify problems before you violate those vendor license agreements by allowing unauthorized and abusive activity through your server. Tracy Farmer Macro Express 101 -- An introduction to Macro Express (A Windows Automation Tool). Macro Express is a powerful tool that can save you time and keystrokes as well as improve accuracy. If you don't know what a macro is, or if you have dipped your toes into the shallow end of the macro express pool, or if you jumped into the deep end of writing Macro Express macros and things did not go quite as you expected, this presentation is for you. Audience: Novice to Intermediate Macro Express Users given by Clyde Putman, Southern Methodist University They are out of here! Patron Purge – Details on deleting patrons with the purge program. Presentation includes a description of options available, detailed instruction, a live demo, useful reports, and the impact on the Circulation Desk (i.e. learn from our mistakes!).
