"Whatever the cost of libraries, it is cheap compared that of an
ignorant nations." -- Walter Cronkite
Did you know that anyone can write and publish a webpage? Because of this, it is important that you use websites that are created by people who are qualified to be writing on the subject matter. For example, would you rather use information on the human body written by a doctor, or someone who has just been to the doctor?
The following are some questions you need to consider when reading webpages.
|Authority and Accuracy: Pick any two sites from the list below. What evidence can you find to determine the basic for claims made on these pages? How could you tell whether or not the information provided is accurate? |
|Advocacy and Objectivity: Pick any two sites from the list below. What evidence can you find to determine whether or not these sites are favoring a particular point of view or are taking an objective approach? |
|Currency and Coverage: Pick any two sites from the list below. What evidence can you find to determine how up to date these pages are and whether or not they cover their topics as completely as they claim?
Questions to consider when reviewing webpages for currency and covergage:
- What does "up to date" or "current" meant for this site?
(Hint: what is the latest date you can find on this site?)
- Does the site really provide information on all the aspects or areas it claims to cover?
- Is the information provide uniformly complete for all the aspects and areas the site claims to cover?
